Building Process of Midification of an DrumExpander “Tama Techstar 306” This 80Å› Machine has Trigger-Inputs, and Pad-inputs.
The Pad Inputs are a bit Velocity Sensitive > so I decidet to make with a DOUTX4 a 8x4Velocity Trigger/Velocity solution.
This Album shows some process off the work.
TekkStar Make 001 Case Logo
The Project starts with an “Tama Techstar 306”
The Project is called TekkStar, because this is what i use it for — Analog Tekkno.
A Fully Analog Drum-Expander out of the 80Å›
Has Trigger Inputs, and Pad-Inputs - which are Velocity Sensitive.
I decidet to take the Pad-Inputs and trigger it with differnt Voltages = Velocitys
The Velocity has 4 Stages - 4 Differnt Resisotors on 4 DOUT-Pins… but later more…
TekkStar Make 002 Case Totale
Here is the front of the Techstar, 6 Voices:
4x Analog Toms (where was bad, because of Broken PCB…)
1x Analog Synth
1x Analog Clap
TekkStar Make 003 Case Back
Here the Backside- on the Right, you can already see the Midi-In-Outs, a Core-Power-Switch- to Reset it, and the PowerConnector (where bevore was a cable)
TekkStar Make 004 Trigger Board Testing Values
Here we go - The Trigger Board
A normal DOUTX4 do the job.
In Serial I place 5K Trim-Potentiometers to find the correct Voltage, for every of the 4 Velocity Stages (for each Trigger seperat)
TekkStar Make 005 Trigger Board Velocity Trimpots
One Register = 2xTrigger (with each 4 Velocity stages)
TekkStar Make 006 Trigger Board Velocity Trimpots
the 5K Pots, now my Ears are in quest
TekkStar Make 007 Trigger Board Velocity Fix Resistors
I finally find standart Resistors that sound good for my ears:
Vel1: 1K
Vel2: 2.2K
Vel3: 4.7K
Vel4: 5.6K
TekkStar Make 008 Trigger Board Soldering
4 Packages of Resistors:
Vel1: 1K
Vel2: 2.2K
Vel3: 4.7K
Vel4: 5.6K
4 Sockets for the hc595s
2x100nf Caps
And one PDF from the Orginal DOUTX4
TekkStar Make 009 Trigger Board Soldering Tools
all the work…
TekkStar Make 010 Trigger Board Soldering Bridges
Some Bridges and a Vector Board
TekkStar Make 011 Trigger Board UpSide
well lot of work…
TekkStar Make 012 Trigger Board DownSide
DINX4 - Trigger - Version:

TekkStar Make 013 Trigger Board Build In Mounting
Find a Place for the Trigger Board
TekkStar Make 014 Trigger Board Build In Wiring
Trigger Board connect to the Voices
TekkStar Make 015 MakeSpace Mixboard
Well I dont need the Mixing Board, it just Mixes a line in, and give you a headphone
what I more need is PLACE!!!
TekkStar Make 016 MakeSpace Adapber.jpg
By wasting the mix board, i have to build an Adapter, because on the mixing board acts also as REWIRING/ROUTING…
I thougt it where a good idea, to make also Connections for later mods (we have here + -15V what is great)
TekkStar Make 017 MakeSpace Adapber.jpg
Well the mixing board is away, and a small Breakout/Adapter and much more place is here
TekkStar Make 018 PS Totale
The Powersupply - where I add a 5V 7805 to supply the Core!
TekkStar Make 019 PS 5VDC 7805
the 7805 and his brothers…
in total we have here:
-15V
+15V
+6V
and soon +5V
TekkStar Make 020 PS Button
Find a Place for the 7805
TekkStar_Make_021_PS_Drill-Holes.jpg
Hole for the 7805, the Pin-Head, the 2 Bridges for ± input
TekkStar_Make_022_PS_Soldering.jpg
7805 alread soldered in

TekkStar_Make_025_PS_Ad-Power-Connector.jpg
I replace the orginal Powerchord against a “Kaltgerätestecker” > Power Connector
a hand drill to the big hole
TekkStar_Make_026_PS_PWR-Con.jpg
a file do the fine
TekkStar_Make_027_PS_Core-Shield.jpg
Shield the Core-Module against the Trafo
TekkStar_Make_028_Core-Mounting-Placing.jpg
mount the Core - already labbeled with the Program
its a 18F452 IP … 8 years old… the board old also…
TekkStar_Make_029_Core-Mounting.jpg
core on the backpanel - nice!
TekkStar_Make_030-Zugentlastung.jpg
Zugentlastung mit Heiskleberpistole — weil diese Litzen so leicht brechen -besonders beim Prototyping.
A Chord grip done with Hot-Clue >>> Nessesery because of Prototyping-Testing Action >>> this will save some ours of Error Research!
TekkStar_Make_031_Place4UI.jpg
We see under the Powersupply we have 14x36cm Place for UI
TekkStar_Make_032_Place4UI.jpg
on th right is also place for a display and menu - when you shorten the powersupply-mount-screw a bit
TekkStar_Make_033_UI-Program-Fader.jpg
in the program stage — we have 2 fader
-
Random Kill
-
Velcotiy-Offset >±64
TekkStar_Make_034_UI-Program-BTN-LEDs.jpg
Well almost all here:
lcd for debugging
4Velocity Kill switches — kill4 Velocity ranges, the red leds below are the toggle leds, the 4 greens indicates in which velocity ranges are most active (you can better choose the kill buttons then!(
2 Buttons under:
One: for POWER - ROLL: just take any input notes and trigger it, no matter of Note-Number (momentary)
TWo: Invert the Velocity Stages — so what was loud is now not so loud, what not so loud now loud
TekkStar_Mod_001_100K-Booooom.jpg
the broken TOM4 Board… the wires, are the "Repair of that Broken Board.
The 100K Resistor well — that is the BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM Mod!
The Amp Decay gets longer!
Finally i used a switch and the 100K, to switch between the extremes… the 100K make the VCA open all the time if the Decay Pot is on max!(only if it was triggered before…)
TekkStar_Mod_002_R56-Paralel-4K7-IC7-Overdrive.jpg
The TOM4 Board was to silent, i dont no why, maybe one of this broken Traces… I decidet to overdrive IC7 by paralell soldering a 4K7 resistor to R56 — if you do other Mods aswell then better take a 5K6, the 4K7 can crackle the IC7 KRRRRR
Finallyi used a 6K8, since after much other mods it was to loud…
TekkStar_Mod_003_Output-Level-Trim-10K.jpg
the TOM4 Board was way to silent - I replaced the R1 or should that meen RI? (next to Rm) with an 10K Trimpot.
Now I Have a Main-Gain - to Level the Voice togehter - to my whises
finally i de-soldered the Rm - since i dont want stereo… i noticed when i go mono, i reduce some humm-sound…
this because i removed the MIX-Board… i think on the mix board, when you connect only one channel, the other was switched to ground… i guess… and of course, the 10K Trimpot do the job excellent…
TekkStar_Mod_004_Output-Level-Trim-10K.jpg
Hot Clue do the job
TekkStar Make 036 Case Totale side
the 19" is a nice desktop case 2
TekkStar Make 035 Trigger Input
Solder the Trigger-Cable to this Potentiometer
cut the the trace - located behind the switch - right to the led - @the top of the PCB. > this because, the unpluged 6,3er socket is switched to ground - and @ ground - no trigger accours…
… it might be a good idea, to cut remove the Plug to get more free space 4 UI! or a big display, or maybe 16 Buttons 4 a sequencer… well i dont know - time will tell
TekkStar Make 037 DoutX4 keep short
this is short & the hot clue is Chord-Clip!
TekkStar Make 038 DoutX4 this Is short
From Trigger-Bord to standart DINX4
TekkStar Make 039 UI Matrix Concept
I had an idea: rotate the the Routing “Trigger-Matrix” 45°
& you have a ergonomic UI for your hands! - You better play it like an instrument then - in theory.
TekkStar Make 040 UI Matrix Concept 45degree
lets look in the detail — ah on every side to the Matrix should be Faders to change Kill, VelocityOffset, VCA-Release & maybe Cutoff
TekkStar Make 040 UI Matrix Space.jpg
Practicly this is what it will look like
the black spacers protect diffus lighting and make a spot @ the top of them.
@the top will be placed a acrylic glass
the whole thing well be cut out as an Rectangel - and will be mounted @the button of the Powersupply-metal, so Frontpanel holes else needet - in theory -well…
TekkStar Make 041 UI Feel The real
try out different spaces 4 the buttons
TekkStar Make 042 UI Matrix To much space
Well more space 4 Fingers, but to bib 4 this project
TekkStar Make 043 UI Matrix I Can live with It
ok, if i drill braille (Deut: Blindenschrift) on it, maybe like an cube-eye (Deut: Würfelauge) I could play it blind, like writing on the laptop, and finding thes “F” and “J” Marks…
TekkStar Make 044 UI Matrix Space
this spacers are a bit to short, but maybe they are not, and the LED that look out 0,5mm will uliminate the Acrylic Glass perfect…maybe…
anywhere i dont have enough spacers now… i will order 100 from both variantes
TekkStar Make 045 UI Matrix Space4Plexi
The big spacer is to big!!! the small maybe a bit to small - so i will order 100 small ones, and 100 1mm bigger…
TekkStar Make 046 UI Matrix Space4Plexi
but i think this is what it will be in the end
TekkStar Make 047 UI Matrix SID Matrix locost
this is only for testing (one row is left…) its from an old sid
TekkStar Make 048 UI Last Tests
last test with the minimal UI
TekkStar Make 049 UI Kill Functions
4 Kill switches
1 Over-Roll-Button
1 Velocity Invert Button
1 Random-Kill-Fader
1 Velocity Offest-Fader
TekkStar Make 050 Paint It Black
well a cd marker is not the best solution to paint a pcb black… it looses colour…
TekkStar Make 051 UI Soldering Soldering
after ours and ours later - the trigger matrix is born
TekkStar Make 052 UI Trigger Matrix I LIKE IT
I love it really I love it!
TekkStar Make 053 UI Trigger Matrix I LIKE IT
because i realy love it - a shot again
TekkStar Make 054 UI Upps I have To replace Pots
hmmm I have the replace 2 Potentiometers of the clap section ---- no problem, below is enough place for it!
a little big is this thing… but it is for PLAYING not for SETUPing … well with my big fingers.
TekkStar Make 055 UI Matrix Connected
ready for programming
TekkStar Make 056 UI Matrix Testtool
Test the matrix with simple LEDs bevore connecting the matrix…
elsewhere you get very confused by programming and testing…
TekkStar Make 057 UI Matrix working
YES the matrix work!
TekkStar Make 058 UI Matrix Resistorchange - plugandplay
plug and play: instead of fixed soldered resistors i solderd “pin-headers” (deutsch: stiftleiste)
bevore i use 150Ohm Resistors.
TekkStar Make 059 UI Matrix Resistorchange
100Ohm Resistors for the Matrix
TekkStar Make 060 UI Matrix Resistor100Ohm
with 100Ohm it still not bright enough…
TekkStar Make 061 UI Matrix BuildIn
time to flex the ui…
TekkStar Make 062 UI LCD BuildIn
a hole for the lcd
TekkStar Make 063 UI LCD Screwed
trigger matrix ui-menue and so on
TekkStar Make 064 UI DigitallyFinished
all digitally in - all analog out
TekkStar Make 065 UI DigitallyFinished1
midibox stuff only
TekkStar Make 066 Analogprt
make place on the analog part (place for encoder and display)
TekkStar Make 067 Analogprt
make place for midibox stuff…
TekkStar Mod 005 Mono Mod
Mono-Mode:
if you just need 1 channel, it is a good idea, to remove follwing resistors to reduce Humming(alot):
TomModule: Rm
ClapModule: R360
Why mono? Maybe you send the main to a mono vcf and vca? thats what i do…and this mode reduce the humming by my machine about half.
TekkStar Mod 006 Decay Open Switch
100K Resistor paralell to D5, switchable… causes a extrem long vca opening…
TekkStar Mod 007 TotallyWired
well have mode alot… not all what i want (lack of Switches and Pots…i have to order…)
TekkStar Mod 008 Hand - Reverb time longer…
Very long Reverb time…
Replace R306 with an 1MOhm Linear Pot
then replace the useless "Reverb-time"Pot “VR32” with fixed 2x 47K Resistors (the pot is 100K and u can use it for other mods!!!)
TekkStar Make 066 MB Brain
wires wires wires… i dont like that sandwitching… but it works…
TekkStar Make 064 Done
yes a fiew mods i want to make… but i need more pots and switches to do that…
TekkStar Make 065 Done
connected to a korg Electribe Rythm MKII- which acts as Sequencer…
TekkStar Make 068 CoreSize
the 8bit memory was to little… so the 32bit must be used… but the standart LPC is way to big for my application…
so i build on vectorboard in 12h a small variante…of course some Connectors i removed…but still enough for future updates are on board…
TekkStar Make 069 Vecotr CoreJPG
12,5h Working time for this crap… but i need this small size…
Tekkstar Testseup - Poly-Note-Retrigger-Mode >> Midi!
The Keyboard give the Midibox(Tama Techstar) some chords, but if you press a Key, you hear NO sound
You will hear the Keys when the drummachine (KorgER1)play a note!
You will hear the Keys on the Red Synth - NordRack II
