Hey everyone. I’m shopping for rotary encoders and I see that some have 2 bit and some have 4 bit output. Which should I use?
2 bit. If you’re not going to buy the recommended parts, then you should buy something with the same specs, and if you’re unsure, you might be better to just get the recommended parts ![]()
I get everything I can from SmashTV, but their encoders are detented. So what are the recommended non-detented ones? I’m just looking to get what’s “normal”.
search the wiki for the word detent ![]()
“Normal” around here is to remove the detents.
SmashTV is not a “they”; he’s a “him”, and he’s our friend, not Farnell ![]()

Hahaha, I guess you beat jimp to it ;D
jaystainbrook: Whether you use detented or undetented encoders is really up to you. The detented ones basically have a clicky feeling and “snap” to values, which is really nice for discrete values (select a patch, scroll through the menu, …), undetented ones do not have that feature and are hence used for continueous values (cutoff, resonance, …). You can get detented ones, open them up and turn them into undetented ones pretty easily, so you can just get the ones Smash sells (get some extras, in case you destroy some) and de-detent them.
Thanks guys. I guess I assumed Smash was more than one person since he seems to do the work of many ![]()
Oh you suck up with the best of them, you can stay ;D
