Midibox Link question

im going to have another core remote from my main core output, and ive got a few questions about the connection between the cores…

  1. how far can i go in distance? is this even a problem to consider ( wont be more than 3 or so feet probably)

  2. do i have to use ribbon cable to connect the mutiple cores? is cable capacitance a problem? will i have a problem if i use around 16AWG wire instead?

Hi,

for distances > 20 cm I would suggest to use the common MIDI port instead of the MIDI Link port. The functionality is the same, but the signals are more stable over such distances.

by ‘common midi port’ you mean the midi Thru connect to the core?

A MIDI Thru is not really required if you chain the core modules.

MIDI Out PC -> MIDI In Core 1 -> MIDI Out Core 1 -> MIDI In Core 2 -> MIDI Out Core 2 -> MIDI In PC

but the only way to link cores is to use the MidiLink idea right? then i have the 20cm distance between core rule?

im going to have 1 core remote by about 3 feet. whats the best way to do this?

i wanted minimal cables going into the other core box.

i can run a power cable and the midibox connect wires next to each other right? should they be sheilded or is plain stranded teflon wire ok?

no, the MIDIbox Link port just only saves one optocoupler and some resistors if two core modules are connected directly. It works at TTL level (0V/5V).

The common MIDI port is a current loop (0/20 mA), therefore higher distances can be realized.

From the software point of view, the behaviour of both hardware solutions is identical
