Aout with max5500

Here’s another aout with two max5500 ics. All works well. Less than 1mV error between -5V and +5V at each whole integer voltage (without needing to use the piece wise interpolation calibration routines). I also made a breakout pcb for the dout and aout (40 jacks)

Looks very interesting.

Was everything soldered by the manufacturer or did you have to do some smd stuff yourself? If I recall you were not happy with the AOUT_NG, so I assume this works better.

How much is it to get this made? Do you still have spare ones you are willing to sell?

Thanks !

  • Most of the SMT parts were placed at the factory (I was feeling lazy was busy with work and had a lot of projects on the go so ordered a few of the projects as part PCBA…). I did solder the DACs by hand…
  • Re: the aout_ng - yeah, had a few issues with it - the bipolar option has an error - it uses non-inverting opamp summing but specifies incorrect resistors for this; in the unipolar configuration you can’t trim the offset out so you may have a pretty decent sized offset of the 0V output ! As I needed a few, I decided just to make my own.
  • I used opa4171 opamps for lower offset etc
  • The MAX5500 is a lot cheaper than the MAX525 btw !
  • I just checked - it cost me $82 (USD) for five assembled pcbs (apart from thru-hole parts and the DACs) to have made in China. The tax/duty and shipping to the UK were on top of this - not sure how much that was - call it maybe $20+ per (mostly) assembled pcb ?
  • I also made a breakout pcb with 40 jacks to use with multiple aouts or in combination with a dout
  • I also made a 19” 2u panel to mount power, switch, usb, sd card, ethernet, iic quad midi, 4 midi in and 4 midi out ports…
  • Bit unsure if I have any spare - I have built four and have one pcb spare but am thinking of stacking a few to have loads of outputs so am reluctant to part with any spares at the moment- sorry !

Wow what an awesome setup.

What kind of music does come out of that? I would love to hear some tracks.

Would you mind sharing your gerber files and the BOM?

cheers

Thanks.

Music - mostly ambient or techno (!) Or layered with guitars… I have some stuff on soundcloud from a few years ago but it’s not great !

Yeah - more than happy to share files - what do you want ? (May take a few days - I’m in the process of moving from Eagle, which has just stopped access, to kicad - so am trying to double check that the projects are intact !)

I really liked Amorphous Metal and This Night if they are yours!

Regarding the pcbs I would be happy with just the zipped gerbers, cpl and bom you uploaded to the manufacturer. While I can solder okish I would not know how to design a pcb.

No rush and have a great weekend

Thanks a lot ! That’s really kind - yes, they are mine.

I have made some minor changes to the pcb to remove some unused parts - will export some gerbers and send them to you this week !
