4-bit mode LCD mandatory?

Is it mandatory to have your LCd in 4-bit mode? I’m not using the CAN bus at all. I Remember disconnecting the 4 wires and losing the second line of my LCD. Do I have to bother with this if have no slaves?

Short version: Yes.

If your LCD won’t support 4bit, you can use other pins with Wilba’s 8bit driver… but the CAN buss pins need to be free.

Okay, I looked at Wilba’s PCB and found that it requires me to not use J5 if I want to use his 8-bit mode. Curses!

Actually, I cut the cables on the LCD and it appears to be okay. Though I’m not sure if my LCD is susceptible to the crash described in the document I found!.

Also I should note that I didn’t have the 1k pullup for a while now without any crashes on startup.

Edit: Thanks again for the info Stryd.

Don’t worry about crashing, worry about permanently frying the pins on the PIC due to short circuits. Follow the schem
