I’ve bought on ebay a bunch of old audio boards to finish my MidiBox FM.
there was an audio board with only one digital chip, the YMF711, having the opl logo stamped on.
i’ve found the datasheet (14MB x 44pages :o ), and i think it’s a very complete and powerful solution for a syntetizer.
check it out, i’m ready for developing if i find someone interested and ready to give an hand!

Yeh, maybe you could summarise for us 
It’s an SB Pro 2 on a single chip. An OPL3, plus digital sound, mixer, microphone inputs, etc.
Might be easiest to get an ISA SB Pro 2 and drive that…

Anyway, this is a whole ISA soundcard on one chip. TK mentioned the 100 pins package. Even if it would be possible to access the OPL part seperately, do you think all the effort of making a custom PCB etc. is worth the 2 Euros another soundcard would cost on the fleamarket?
Accessing the other (mixer) functions is also not very interesting because the audio specs of a 10 year old 16 bit sound card are probably worse than anything that is sold today.

Still, if you wanna build a project based around that thing, go ahead! No, it won’t be easy, but if you can support all the features (the mixer particularly), woohoo!
