Serial to MIDI conversion

I’m totally new to this but I wanna try an get an old serial trackball to work as a MIDI X-Y controller. Also it would be cool if it’s possible to get the buttons to act as MIDI switches! The output plug for the trackball is a female COM style. Anyone got any tips?

I see you have the design for a MIDIbox to COM convertor. Could this be wired in reverse to convert the trackball signal to MIDI, then use a MIDI filter to convert the data to a useful form.
