over at the KVR Audio forums. It uses a vsti to provide full midi control of the unit… interesting. Even more interesting, though, is the fact that it’s classified as a DIY project but they actually sell the units (I think without the sid chip) for $300.
Does anybody have any additional knowledge of how hypersid compares to MIDIbox SID in sound and programming department? (other differences such as interface, expadibility, etc. are pretty much given)
It remembers me on HardSID, but there is only one SID, the ready-built hardware is more expensive. Compared to MBSID you will mainly miss the polyphony, dedicated sound engines, modulation capabilities, wavetables, arpeggiators, live-sequencers, etc… etc…
From the feature list:
3 OSC per key (Monophonic)
1 OSC per key (3 Voice polyphonic)
4 Waveforms per OSC Tri , Saw ,Noise, Pulse (combinatorial)
OSC transpose range +36 to -36 Semitone
OSC cent range -50 to +50 Cent
OSC ring modulation
3 Amp Envelope ADSR
Multimode analog filter 12dB/Octave HP , LP , BP and (combinatorial)
these are the SID internal functions, you will find them on any SID based synth
1 LFO Part with sync , retrig and invert capability
1 Step LFO Part with sync , retrig and invert capability
Only two LFOs?
2 General purpose envelope generator with invert capability
Interesting, 2 ENVs
Individual routing for each modulation source
I see 4 modulation sources
88 Parameter for controlling overall synthesizer (automation recordable)
Fits nice into the CC range
Flexible preset manager with save and load function
Natively supported by the VST host
Built in 64 categorized Factory preset .
Nice starting point
Clean sound without any Self oscillating in most of the Presets
Means: the filter is not self-oscillating.
Automatic real time synchronization between software and hardware
How about an automatic real time synchronisation between human and hardware?
Independent MIDI out path from host
As workaround for PC based Logic Audio
Very low CPU usage
Thats the killer argument today!
Sorry, couldn’t resist
Just compare with the MBSID feature list, and consider that HyperSID is based on exactly the same hardware as MBSID V1! So, there is even no cost advantage. And we have a VST plugin as well: http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php/topic,5116.0.html, so where is the innovation?
MBSID trumps ALL. With V2 playing back psid, it is absolutely cutting edge!
Midibox - I’ve never seen so much detail in DIY hard, firm and software, and I don’t think I will. This makes me happily and willingly devote much of my life to MB.

Agreed, its a very complex synth indeed.
I wonder whats in line for V3?
Maybe TK will add a SEQ, for more convenient programming of the drums & bassline mode, sort of like the MB-808!
They have built the plugin in Synthmaker and i am a beta tester and moderator of the forum for that package
They havent robbed any of TKs design
They where going to contact Wilba to see if he has any spare SIDs left but they are actually too scared now cause they think they have pissed you guys off
They are really really great guys i can confirm that and im looking forward to having a Hyper working with my MIDIbox SIDs soon and very shortly after that two Wilbabeasts too
PS they showed me this thread when i pointed them at MIDIbox and i am a little gutted that this is the first thing they have seen of our community here
They never had any intentions of stepping on anyones toes and to be perfectly honest we are all very proud of them over at the Synthmaker community
The plugin is free
The PCB design can be downloaded free
The firmare for the pic can be downloaded for free
But they have kept the option to build some units and sell them commercially for what i would say is a very fair price in reality
I’m not pissed off! I was just making a joke… (I do not like Commodores getting destroyed for SIDs which are now reasonably obtainable). I’m still waiting for them to contact me.
Instead of seeing people as pissed off, you can see that we are being pampered by TK, and midiBox rises the bar really high for any DIY effort out there

I’ve following proposal:
I would grant permission to use the MIOS bootloader for their project. This would allow everybody to upload the original HyperSID firmware into a MIDIbox via MIDI, but it would also be an advantage for people who built the original HyperSID hardware (no PIC programmer required for updates)
I would give them the routine which allows to access MBHP_SID
This would increase the number of potential users for the Plug-In dramatically.
In return I would like to know the CC implementation, so that I’m able to integrate a compatibility mode into the MBSID firmware without re-engineering the plug-in
