My MIDIbox 808 “Circle Sequencer” … pics from all design phases
First draft CS PCB
This was my original design for the control surface PCB, designed for home etching. I since decided to include the control surface and DIN/DOUT on a single PCB, externally fabricated
First draft DIN/DOUT PCB
The DIN/DOUT was to be connected to this PCB, “sammich” style, using SIP headers. This board was also designed for home etching. I quickly came to realize that this was going to require a ridiculous amount of drilling, and too many wires on top of my single-sided board.

Here’s the front of the PCB from Laen’s weekly bulk order. The solder mask is a sexy purple, but this pic is snapped with no flash, the pic looks a bit brownish

Notice how different the pcb colour is when I use the flash? The actual colour is tamer than this, but more purple than the others. I hope to have something running later this week … the parts are just sitting loose in the board for now
Wrong resistors!
It wasn’t until I had a few more pics taken that I realized I used 35 resistors with the wrong value. Looking at this pic, it’s a lot easier to tell they are 10 K, not 220 ohms! (But I still love miniature 1/4W resistors).
I have since replaced them all with the correct value.
SMT shift registers
I really like SOIC ICs. They take up so little room, and they are really fast to solder once you get the knack of it. For this board, the shift registers are all on the back. Space was tight, so I had to go surface mount.

I went back to Laen and got 3 of these little Bankstick boards made for $5.69 USD, all-in, shipped. Once I verify it works correctly (I’m confident it will) I will publish the Eagle file, and anybody who wants 3 boards needs only to send it in!

Oct2011: 3/4 View
The case is a Hammond 1456FE1. We are only seeing the top portion of the assembly. All those holes are drilled, and I used a Dremel to get the square hole for the BPM display. I will be putting a tinted diffuser in there…
Oct 2011: Button Height
This pic shows the height of the buttons pretty well. It was hard initially to find 5.8 mm spacers, but I’m really happy with the result. And despite an incredibly tough time finding the spacers online, a local surplus electronics shop happens to have thousands in stock!
