Mouse wheels for encoders

Is it possible to scavange mouse wheels and use them as encoders. :-[

Encoder and slide pot are very expensive in south africa

and motor slide pots are un-heard off here.

PCB are very cheap.

Company in cape town offers a print service over 24hrs
