this is just a general question really
do you think there will ever be a cheap easy to make ie not smd midi-usb module
i understand why there isnt the silicon problems and the slackness with the microcontroller company sorting it out
but is it at this stage just reinventing the wheel and should i just keep hacking commercial units into my projects especially considering the price s/h of these units

In the meantime USB interfaces are so cheap, that it doesn’t make a difference if you are using a DIY unit or not.
Some commercial interfaces have the advantage, that they are not using the legacy MIDI USB driver of M$ - accordingly they are mostly multi client capable, thats a big plus
I’m not planning to try other chips… the PIC18F4550 desaster was already frustrating enough, and answering requests like “could you please make it available”, “why not trying another chip” do frustrate me even more, because I don’t need this interface for myself, I don’t want to spend the time for additional support effort if the interface doesn’t work with the exotic windows version somebody is using, and I’ve a lot of other interesting projects in the queue.

i can relate to what your saying about frusration the frusrationi caused my self trying to get two of the usb modules up and running
i did think its a little like reiventing the wheel at this stage when all the other projects have come so far
theres a part of me really likes hacking a commercial product apart and incorporating it in my project
have you got a good recommendation for a commercial variety thats multi-client
ive always got on with m-audio but i dont think these are multi-client
