I saw this amazing site about DIY synth projects. I wouldn’t dream of that something nice like this existed.
Anyway. After a browsing through everything I could find about the MIDIbox SID - I decided to build one. The sound from the SID has ALWAYS impressed me since I started with electronic music.
However - Some things are not clear to me, so here are the questions…
I am planning on having 4 SIDs in the box, and complete with surface controls and everything, but HOW do I connect the box to the computer?
And do I connect the MIDIbox SID with a external synthesizer or midi keyboard with the standard round midi connections that can be found on most MIDI equipment?
I kinda saw a setup in my mind:
A MIDIbox SID with 4 SIDs and all the control things etc wired with a cheap midi keyboard - basically as a usual synthesizer with keyboard.
Do you guys get the idea? Would it work the way I imagined? Please answer

you need a midi interface, if you have a soundblaster or similar card, all you need to add is a cheap midi breakout cable, I have seen these on ebay, but I have built 3 myself

yes, you can control the midibox Sid with a controller keyboard, any midi keyboard should be ok.
Just have to add my two pennies =) I had this idea in my mind for some time. That would be grabbing some old keyboard (some old Yamaha PSR or something ), ripping everything out and build a SIDbox into it =) Like a regular synth integrated into an old synth / keyboard… Hmmm, I gotta go create a design for that one =)
Btw.: Chris Abbott, the man behind http://www.c64audio.com, will introduce a selfmade shoulder-slung playable SID keyboard (with MIDIbox SID inside of course) at the BIT live event in Brighton (see http://www.backintimelive.com)
