After his first MIDIbox SID Step-A (http://www.midibox.org/forum/index.php?topic=6264.0), Jack (aka. jackan) built this black-green beast! A really beautiful one! ![]()
Oh yes black is soooo beautiful⦠![]()
Nice LCD too !

Nice one Jack
Similar colour scheme to mine, now I know it will look just as I imagined it
Fantastic!
Iām guessing that the LCD is actually a PLED, visible at that angleā¦
Whereād the panel come from? Schaeffer/FPE?
;D ;D ;D
NICE! That black/green is perfect for sure! I especially like the LCD/OLED display which gives the wohle baby a little āwowā effect! Pretty stuffed inside, too! ![]()
That is beautifull machine, Jack! Display is definitly kickass.
I am interested in black housing⦠I painted my Traktor controller black myself. But, your case is black inside. Was it originaly black or you painted it inside too? That pannel is made of??? and by???
thatās a cool box! well done! i like the whole āsplinter cellā look to it. can you show us the back? (or is it as messy as mine will be? ;D)
Thank you guys for your comments!
The panel was made by someone on this forum. The result was not so good when you take a good look at it, and the panel was scratched on arrival. I e-mailed this person, telling him about my concerns, but he has not replied. Therefore I choose not to mention his name.
I painted the case myself. I have never heard of original black C64s. Do these exist?
Sweet Box,
was there ever a black C64 ? I donĆĀ“t think so.
Concerning the panel, whoever made it⦠nice work so far and so close to perfect ;). Some slight modifications in the setup and in the machining-plan and itĆĀ“s excellent next time.
What did it cost ?
The material looks like the brushed black eloxated aluminium, I use, too. Very, very, very difficult to work with and the pure hell to fill with color ;). Good, you didnĆĀ“t try, lol.
Cheers,
Michael
Excellent work,
but let me allow one warning for other midiboxer:
I donāt think, it is a good idea to put the power supply (and main power) without any case into the C64 box.
If you do so, never supply power to the box while it is opened.
Perhaps you also get some noise to the audio out?
(If I see it right itās a switching supply?)
So if you take my advise: Make a external power supply for safety reasons and for āno-trouble-with-noiseā reasons. High-End equipment never houses a AC supply inside. Always external.
Please donāt mind this ⦠always safety first. We donāt want to loose anybody on the way ;D
greets
Doc
Wow that is so tidy!! I love it!!!
Great choice of colours.
All the best,
John
just think off all those poor old commodre 64ās
What exactly is wrong with the panel? It looks pretty good in the pics but then again the pics arenāt close up of the entire panel.
Whatās up with that piece of paper that appears to be right above the power supply? Isnāt that kind of a fire hazard?

Ive been asked is my C64 originally black, and I aske back same question as you, because Ive never heard there are black version. The guy said there are black C64. ??? I have about 10 C64 and they are all dirty white and light brown. Also, seams there is none of the exactly same colour and surface texture. Also they have clips on different places. They are all pretty different.

Maybe custom, but not from the shop⦠the SX64ās are darker but it aint black either.
The C16 had a very similar case to the 64, and that was a very dark charcoal grey, with light grey keys. Saw one at a car boot sale ~3 years ago for ĆĀ£2, but decided against itā¦

sexy!
@Therezin+Sasa+aileroned:
yes, itās correct, only C16 has a black caseā¦
Commodore produces never a black case for a C64ā¦![]()
really nice work, but i wouldnāt built in the PSU into it too.

It doesnt matter, they looks exactly the same. Originaly black case is better than custom made since they put pigment in the plastic in the mixing proces. Obviously C16 wasnt popular as C64. Too bad.
really nice work, but i wouldnāt built in the PSU into it too.
I think it is OK if PSU is in it as long as it is shiedled in some metal housing with ventilation holes. It is more compact that way. You don`t gave to drag around one more PSU.
this MIDIbox SID looks great ;D
i really want to know where you get those encoder capsā¦
(i also would like to use them
)
is the same type of caps used by waldorf (q; micro-q, ā¦)?
These knobs are the same ones used by Waldorf.
Iāve bought these knobs from ALBS.de, refer to previous discussion:
