Something else worth considering is an asus eeebox… They’re numerous, so they’re cheap, and there’s lots of support. About the size of a hardback at 223x178x26mm…no PCI slots but plenty of USB, and WLAN built in, etc… at 350USD it’s more than the parts for a real embedded system, but you might save a lot of hassle…

They’re pretty hackable too, do a search and you’ll see. They also run SUSE quite nicely.
Another option would be to install Linux on to an old wireless router and use that… I’m sure this is possible but haven’t down the research so am unsure on specs or what could be done with it.
