I’ve seen that mentioned for encoders here. Is it also usually possible for center detented pots, and how much of a pain in the a$$ are we talking about? ;D
Thanks,
George

Hi,
It´s all about the mechanical construction. If the pot is held together with a little metal flanges as in the encoders, it should be easy. Anything sealed: Forget about it.
So, experiment!

Anything sealed: Forget about it.
If it is a good pot (esp. for audio apps) it IS sealed. Otherwise it’s not a good one.

Thanks guys,
I’m going to try to find one I can open in a bit.
@Doc- These probably aren’t considered “good”, so maybe I’ve got a chance. Here’s a picture where you can see one-

Ok, I see, … I also think you have a chance!

I guess it’s this guy:
Sort of gooey in there isn’t it? So, does it operate fine without that thing or does it do something other than just the detent?
George
hi george
it only detends the grid, but you have to bend the thingy inside and keep it flat with all the rest of the metal thing (???) then put back the whole thing, you can t do without it, it is very important that you keep the little lip as flat as possible without bending the whole metal stuff…
there you go, take care of working in a clean surface with clean tools, those small encoders are as delicate as expensive, ciao
Simone,
Thanks! Yeah, these are just regular pots. I was wondering about the consequences of digging around in this stuff too, like if any of the “detent removers” here have ended up with poorly functioning pots/encoders afterward (or over time)?
George
PS- I think these particular detents suck anyway. Some of them already feel sort of “wide” and less distinct. Maybe if I just twisted the pots back and forth for a while, while watching TV or something, the detents would disappear on their own. ;D
I never had any problem with hand/undetented encoders you can eventually chop the little lip off and use it as a toothpick. or as a boomerang for australian dwarves.
as i ve told you dirt is your only enemy.
