It’s a misunderstanding. Scottish bank notes are not legal tender in England, or as far as I know the whole of the UK, including Scotland. People have mis-interpreted “legal tender” as meaning that you cannot use any money which is not legal tender to buy things. In reality, legal tender refers to what you can legally use to pay off any crediters (restricted to a certain amount of coins, notes, etc.) … basically, it’s bullshit.

In the past people have also being dodgy about accepting Scottish notes because they were easier to forge due to their security measures, and also, people didn’t know what they looked like so could not check them properly.

They’re also a yucky shade of brown / tartan and play the bagpipes loudly at night.
